REDWOOD CITY, CA – WestLight Energy’s Board of Directors approved lowering electric generation charges for San Mateo County and City of Los Banos customers for at least the first six months of 2025, providing additional relief in monthly bills on top of an existing discount WestLight Energy customers already receive compared to higher generation rates levied by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
The lowered WestLight Energy rates went into effect on February 10 following the Board’s January 23 approval, and expand the rate discount to at least 10 percent compared with PG&E generation rates. The combined discount should decrease the average customer monthly electricity bill by roughly $7 and potentially up to $20 or more in some areas and among higher energy users.
“It is increasingly difficult for everyone in our service territory to afford essential services like electricity and we are doing what we can to help lower those costs,” WestLight Energy CEO Shawn Marshall said.
Last year, WestLight Energy’s Board of Directors froze its electricity generation rates for the first six months of 2024 in response to PG&E’s announced 15-percent rate increase at the time.
“We all agree an even-deeper discount is needed this year to help our customers,” said Donna Colson, Burlingame Councilmember and Chair of WestLight Energy’s Board of Directors. “Our job is to serve the community, not shareholders. And one of the ways we do that is by keeping electricity as affordable as possible.”
Since its inception in 2016, WestLight Energy has offered its customers a discount of at least five percent below PG&E’s baseline electric generation rate, saving its customers over $185,000,000.
WestLight Energy appears as a separate line item on customer PG&E bills, replacing a higher charge imposed by PG&E for generating power. PG&E still charges all customers, including those receiving WestLight Energy-generated power, for delivering the electricity and for gas service.
